Russia wants to combine biometrics and eSIM

As in the case of the State Services, in order for the EBS to become fully operational, it needs a “real” application, preferably not only in the banking sector. Izvestia reported that Rostelecom decided to combine plans to launch remote eSIM and the need to fill out a biometric database, so at the output we can get a useful tool.

Work on the creation of remote identification of subscribers using a person and voice has already begun. As in the case of financial services, for registration, the user will need to take a picture on the device’s camera and say a few words into the microphone, which is an excellent alternative to personal presence in the operator’s office. True, officials and market participants have made their “fly in the ointment” – under the new technology will have to change the industry regulatory framework.

To the Big Four operators, the initiative to use biometrics seems interesting, but everyone recognizes that it requires further development. In general, there are no legislative barriers to the introduction of eSIM in Russia, however, there are a number of necessary adjustments in the telecom industry base (and subsequently in others, if the technology is still spread). They plan to discuss them at a working meeting scheduled for early October. Including there they will raise the issue of remote identification. Tele2, who was allowed to continue pilot testing, confirmed the invitation to it.

For each successful identification of a citizen in the EBS, banks pay 200 rubles to Rostelecom. What will be the tariffs for operators has not yet been determined.

ESIM technology is really useful and necessary. Besides the fact that it is indispensable for connecting automatic devices to IoT, with its help, the telecom market will finally shake itself and refresh itself. Millions of SIM cards produced now every year will simply not be needed. Subscribers will begin to migrate intensively to various operators or mix the necessary tariffs on their device, thereby reviving the competition. However, it is worth considering that operators can agree with smartphone manufacturers to pre-install their profile on new devices, thereby gaining an advantage. In 5G, eSIM also plays a significant role, providing access to connecting various sensors and automated systems.
